AWS keeps its word to invest four billion dollars. After an initial check for $1.25 billion, it is now pumping another $2.75 billion into the AI company.
AWS is true to its word: When it invested $1.25 billion in Anthropic in September, the cloud giant committed a total of $4 billion. The second hard drive went to Anthropic on Wednesday, AWS confirmed in a press release. Both companies are deepening their shared commitment to the further development of generative AI.
Give a little, take a little. With the invested money, AWS will take a minority stake in Anthropic. The cloud provider also supplies chips for training AI models and is Anthropic’s preferred cloud partner. The latter is particularly important for AWS, as Google is also explicitly attracted to the company.
Anthropic is making a name for itself in the AI world. The company, which is only three years old, is known for its Claude models. The third generation, consisting of Claude 3 Opus, Sonnet and Haiku, is performing well and appears to be well on its way to dethroning ChatGPT. However, since LLMs cost a lot of money to train and maintain, they could benefit from a financially strong partner like AWS.
AWS, in turn, hopes to build the same bond with Anthropic that Microsoft did with OpenAI. After a rather slow start, the cloud provider is now fully involved in the AI debate. At Bedrock, AWS lets customers build AI applications themselves, but also presented alternatives to ChatGPT and Dall-E under the name Amazon Q at its recent re:Invent conference.
