Prime Minister ThailandSretta Taweesin ordered this Thursday to increase animal and human health surveillance when detected in Laos several outbreaks of anthrax in which more than fifty people were infected.

The President called on the authorities “protect the public” and immediately report any infections, including in livestock.

“The Prime Minister has instructed Health Minister Chongnan Srikaev to closely monitor the situation, especially near the borders,” Chai Watcharong, a spokesman for the Prime Minister, said in a statement.

Anthrax, which usually affects livestock and wildlife by inhaling or ingesting spores from the soil, can be transmitted to humans by eating contaminated food or by direct contact with secretions from an open wound.

“It is important to note that you do not touch, move or dissect corpses for consumption. And if you have contact with sick animals and have any unusual symptoms, contact your doctor immediately,” the representative emphasized.

However, the virus, which can be life-threatening and can be treated with antibiotics, cannot be transmitted between people through casual contact, coughing or sneezing.

The measure was taken after it was discovered this month. 54 cases in the Laotian province of Champasak, border with Thailand, a country that has not recorded an anthrax case since 2001.
