Google Pixel 8 owners have something to be happy about. The search giant’s LLM AI model has been confirmed to be available on the device. The company had initially announced that the smallest version of the Gemini Nano for mobile devices would be limited to the Pixel 8 Pro. Google’s vague response to the lack of AI model support also angered Pixel 8 owners.
Google Pixel 8 will get Gemini Nano
Hardware limitations were cited as the main reason for the lack of Gemini Nano support on Pixel 8. This was surprising because the only difference between the standard and professional version of the device was the amount of RAM. Both phones are powered by the Tensor G3 chipset, but the Pixel 8 has 8 GB of RAM, while the Pro model has a maximum of 12 GB of RAM. It is noteworthy that the AI model also works in the basic version of the Samsung Galaxy S24.
In a statement to Android Authority, Google confirmed that Gemini Nano will be released on all Pixel 8 devices. The search giant said that large language models on phones with different memory can provide different user experiences. It looks like they’ve found a way to get LLM on Pixel 8 through extensive testing.
Gemini Nano will be available as a developer preview with the next Pixel Feature Release update expected in June. Developer options can be accessed by going to Settings > About phone and tapping the build number seven times. The LLM model will enable two features on the Pixel 8: tokenization and summarizing notes with Gboard Smart Reply, which promises faster conversational responses. Meanwhile, Pixel 8 Pro will have the advanced features and advantages of Gemini Nano.
