From today, the digital ID Smart-ID is available in Belgium as an alternative to Itsme.

Smart-ID is a universal app for authenticating people and for legally valid digital signatures. With Smart-ID you can log in to apps from banks, authorities or document platforms. The brand has big ambitions in Belgium and wants to introduce electronic identification on all phones to compete with Itsme.

Smart-ID is the market leader in several Northern European countries. In 2023, around 1 billion transactions were registered, three times more than in our country. SK ID Solutions uses a paid per transaction model and offers other digital identity services in addition to authentication.

In Belgium, SK ID Solutions has great ambitions to gain a foothold alongside Itsme. As a first step, they entered into a partnership with Trust1team from Merelbeke. Today they already provide identification services for various Belgian and European banks, government and healthcare organizations and in highly secure environments.

Together with SK ID, they want, among other things, to further develop their digital wallet offering on smartphones. Sun wallet can be used for authentication, digital payments or loyalty cards.

The European Commission has been using Smart-ID’s time stamping since 2019 to certify documents using a time stamp. This proves the authenticity of a digital document and shows the exact date and time it was created, saved or signed.
