Thieves in Montreal, Canada, used Apple AirTags to facilitate vehicle thefts, Vermont news sites report WCAX And NBC5 . Police officers in Burlington, Vermont, recently issued a warning about AirTag use for drivers visiting Canada.

Two Burlington residents found Apple AirTags in their cars after returning from a trip to Montreal, and these aren’t the first reports police have encountered. A man named Ethan Young said he was traveling from Montreal after visiting family and was warned that an AirTag was traveling with him. He was able to use his phone to signal the “AirTag” and locate the device placed on the car’s front grille.

These incidents have been going on for a while, but there has been a new increase in activity, said Ryan McLiverty, a cyber analyst with the Vermont Intelligence Center. Criminals in Montreal are using AirTags to track cars, steal them and then sell them abroad. There’s also the possibility that AirTags could be used to tag cars as part of attempts to smuggle drugs across the border.

Travelers concerned about being tracked with an ‌AirTag‌ should know that it has built-in security features. If the ‌AirTag‌ is out of range of the person who owns it, it will send a notification and this notification will appear on the iPhone. Android phones can also detect unknown Bluetooth trackers, including AirTags, and Apple has a Tracker Detect app that looks for them.
