The race for next-generation mobile connectivity is heating up as Xiaomi joins OPPO and Vivo in adopting 5.5G technology. According to a recent tip from Digital Chat Station, Xiaomi is preparing to roll out the 5.5G update via OTA (Over-the-Air) updates, potentially to devices powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset.
China Mobile also recently tested the Xiaomi 14 Ultra, reaching speeds of up to 5132 Mbps.
5.5G upgrade on the horizon
5.5G, also known as 5G-A, bridges existing 5G networks with future 6G. It promises significant improvements over the previous model, such as a tenfold increase in download speeds exceeding tens of gigabits per second, lower latency, improved positioning and better network reliability.
Most smartphones equipped with the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 and Dimensity 9300 processors are capable of supporting 5.5G. The news comes after OPPO announced full 5.5G support for the Find X7 series and Vivo announced its first line-up of compatible devices.
Patent hints at the future of the Connected Car
Xiaomi seems to be aiming for the future of connected vehicles beyond mobile phones. A new patent application discovered by Tianyancha hints at Xiaomi’s interest in vehicle-to-satellite communications. This technology could potentially optimize the quality and reliability of satellite communications in Xiaomi cars by offering features such as improved navigation and emergency response capabilities. However, details are not yet clear as to whether this feature will be integrated into future Xiaomi models or will be offered as an update for the recently released Xiaomi SU7.
