Three men were arrested after interrupt Easter mass at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York, after they approached the altar with a banner that read: “Silence = Death.”

The information was confirmed by the group Extinction Rebellion NYC (XR NYC), which organized the protest and defines itself as a group environmental and anti-genocide activists, who released a statement on social media on March 31.

The application is accompanied by video showing this moment in which cathedral security officers remove the banner and carry them out of the chancel, pushing them until they are forced out of the church through a side door.

Shortly before this, a demonstration took place in Times Square, which attracted a large number of pro-Palestinian people demanding ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“We are here to speak the truth about ‘ecocide’ and genocide as loudly as the moment demands,” John Mark Rosendahl of Palestine Solidarity XR New York shouted in the church, according to local media.

Today’s statement also noted that “war, occupation and industrial pollution poisoning of soil, air and water in Gaza and throughout the planet, destroying the Earth’s ability to support life.”

“This destruction is called ‘ecocide,'” said Gregory Schwedock of Palestine Solidarity at XR in New York.

The group also pointed out on social media that the UN Security Council’s call for a ceasefire is a “good start” but that “ceasefire statements from churches are also “They are part of the solution.”
