2024 is an important year for Apple’s operating system. Due to European regulations, they will have to accept app installation from third-party stores and outside the App Store. AltStore is one of the longest running stores on iOS. Thanks to this, it is possible to install third-party applications. Problem? Today AltStore can only be installed via a server on macOS or Windows, and to run it we need to do it in developer mode.
This is a nearly impossible path for average users, which blocks access to the open source repository. Reason? AltStore became popular for allowing you to install emulators on iOS. Apple was not amused.
From the store itself, they showed what the app installation process will be like when Apple opens the door to third-party stores. They even boast that they will be among the first to offer such an alternative. Via a post on Threads, they demonstrated how to install apps from outside the App Store.
This is how AltStore will work
AltStore is currently preparing a version specifically adapted for the European Union. It will be an ad-free and free repository of Open Source applications Direct integration with Patreon when marketing apps.
AltStore will allow you to install applications very easily: the process will be similar to that in the App Store
The store’s main developer demonstrated in Threads how the store would work, showing that for now the repository hosts both Delta and Clip, which are self-developed apps. In both cases, we are talking about a monthly payment of three dollars to be able to test these betas.
Developers hosting their apps on AltStore They won’t have to pay the traditional commissionThis is the main reason why they are avoiding the App Store. The developer explains that they can “use the Patreon integration we use to distribute paid apps.”
When it comes to installation processes, they couldn’t be simpler. We will select the application from the store itself and through biometric authentication we will be able to download it; This is very similar to installing an app from the App Store.
And in case you doubt, yes: the applications we install from alternative stores will appear on the iPhone desktop, we will not need to open the store every time we want to access them.
The season is slowly opening: side loading This is coming soon on iOS, and we’ll soon be able to install apps from outside the Apple app store.
