Web browsers: Chrome leads; Edge won’t refresh and Firefox tends to become irrelevant

Statcounter published monthly statistics with the share of web browsers. Not too many changes though trends continue and you have it summed up in the title.

No one can blame Google Chrome. Having beaten Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, it widely dominates the web browsing market. Last month it increased by 0.39 points to 65.77% participation. Unmatched on both desktop and mobile and very well positioned to dominate for many years to come with the new ARM native release.

Microsoft Edge won’t refresh. The best browser in Microsoft’s history, vastly improved after adopting a foundation promoted by Chromium, it doesn’t get any better. It lost 0.05 points to 12.71% last month. Not even taking advantage of Windows’ monopoly, its pre-installation on new computers, and the bad artistry of its developer. Changes imposed by the European DMA will even allow it to be uninstalled. A more open field for Chrome.

Apple Safari, limited to Mac. Apple’s web browser depends on the personal computers that Apple sells, because outside of its own platform, it is true that it is not used. A stable trend for years, it has an 8.63% share of web browsers.

Firefox is getting worse. Mozilla’s development is not going through the best moments and continues to decline month by month. The March 2024 quota leaves us at 6.61% after a decrease of 0.64 points. Firefox, the only open source among the big ones, is hugely important for web browsing, but with the data in hand, the trend is insignificant.

As regards mobilityStatcounter separately publishes market share data and the situation remains unchanged with a large dominance by Google and Apple by pre-installing their browsers on Android and iOS mobile phones sold all over the planet. Only the Samsung and Opera browsers manage to take a few points off. Microsoft Edge or Firefox don’t even appear in the top-5.
