Steam survey month by month it gives us very useful information about the hardware and software set used by its users. Contrary to what many people think, this data is not automatically collected from all its users, but each month a representative sample of them is selected and all are asked from the Steam PC client if they are willing to cooperate. in said sampling.
So, If the user gives consent, the application collects all the data it needs and then asks the user for permission to send them, allowing the user to review them. Valve has always been, and still is, a company that respects its users quite a bit, and that’s evident in this case as well, as they were indeed able to use telemetry features to automatically retrieve said data, as we’ve seen. … seen in many other cases.
This information, updated monthly, probably does the most complete and reliable X-ray preferences of users who use their computer for gaming (either exclusively or as one of several activities) and thus a fairly significant picture of the market situation. A market where, month after month, we see a few consolidating their absolute dominance, while others try to keep scraping a few tenths or at least not go lower (in numbers, you understand).
So we’ll find out when we check the latest data Intel, NVIDIA, and Microsoft dominate Steam’s March survey, of course in the categories of processors, graphics adapters and operating systems, or And it is in the latter that we see the greatest example of superiority. Let’s look at the percentages in each case:
In more detail, and we will start talking about operating systems, this category has both good and bad news for Microsoft. The positive reading is more than obvious and it is more than 95 out of 100 players on Steam choose their operating system. The bad news, however, is that Windows 10 continues to be the most used version with 54.40% of the total, compared to 41.61% for Windows 11. And yes, it’s true that 11’s share is growing, but let’s not forget that since the launch of 11 approximately two and a half years have passed and that support for the 10 will end next October. This may seem like a long time, but we are talking about many systems waiting to be migrated.
The category of operating systems is supplemented by the following:
When it comes to graphics adapters, NVIDIA takes the biggest piece of the pie, something the GeForce RTX 3060 particularly excels atpresent in almost 7 out of every 100 computers (6.92%. And if we add to this the mobile version of the same, which accumulates 3.06%, we find that practically every tenth player uses this GPU, which is a complete success.
But NVIDIA’s dominance on Steam isn’t limited to this particular model. If we go through the list of the most used GPU models, we find that the first 15 positions in the list were occupied by graphics adapters from the green giant. The 16th and 17th were occupied by AMD and Intel, respectively, and later we will find three more NVIDIA models. The list consists of a total of 90 models plus the addition of “other”, inu, 57 of the 90 most used graphics cards are from NVIDIA, compared to 22 from AMD and 11 from Intel. If you want more information about graphics cards, read our equivalence guide.
These are the remaining percentages in the category:
Finally, Intel leads the CPU section with 68.07%compared to 31.93% for AMD chips. In this case, we see that the fight aims to be closer, but we are still talking about Intel occupying two thirds of the market, which is undoubtedly an achievement. Of course, AMD has had great success with integrated stacked caches, which are proving to be a very good option to build a gaming PC, and we don’t have to go far for it, as it was an option shared with us by Isidro Ros, when he was showing us his new computer. If you want more information about processors, be sure to read this guide, where we talk about stacked cache, but also about IPC, cores, and everything you need to know to choose the most suitable processor for your needs.
