Apple released the first beta version for developers iOS 17.5and as expected, the update added support for downloading apps from developer websites in the European Union.
Even iOS 17.4 Apple began allowing developers to offer their applications through alternative application marketplaces in the European Union under the Digital Markets Act. Apple had originally planned for apps to be available only through these marketplaces, but in March Apple announced it would add support for downloading apps directly from websites.
To make an application available for download from a website in the European Union, developers must meet certain criteria. They must have been part of the Apple Developer Program for two or more consecutive years and have an app first installed on iOS by more than a million people in the European Union in the previous year. Other requirements include Apple notarizing and publishing transparent data collection policies.
Apple will provide an API to authorized developers that will allow them to make their applications available for download over the Internet. In this way, downloaded applications can be restored and updated. Apps offered over the internet will not charge Apple’s infamous fee, but will be charged a basic technology fee of €0.50.
