Soon you’ll be able to decide how much RAM Edge can use. Allocating too little RAM can impact browser performance, warns Microsoft.
Microsoft Edge is getting a new feature that allows you to limit the amount of memory allocated to the browser. The feature isn’t available yet, but is being fully tested in a Canary build, according to a shared screenshot about X
You can find the RAM controller in the menu Browser basics, where you can find information about Edge battery usage and safety, among other things. A simple slider lets you determine how much RAM Edge gets, from 1GB to your PC’s maximum capacity. You can dynamically scale this up and down as needed.
The amount of RAM a browser uses depends on how many tabs you have open. Inactive tabs that you leave open are temporarily saved in memory so you can quickly reopen them. No idea how much RAM is in your PC and how much is left? You can check this below in Task Manager Perfomance.
Microsoft also warns against being too stingy with Edge. Setting a low limit may affect your browser speed. You shouldn’t expect your browser to be able to handle dozens of tabs at once on 1GB of RAM.
Microsoft has made several moves in recent years to help Edge use your PC’s memory more efficiently. Three years ago, a “performance mode” was introduced in which the browser automatically adjusts performance based on your device’s capabilities. Edge lets inactive tabs go to sleep after two hours so they don’t use unnecessary RAM in the background.
