Biden conditions support for Israel; must protect civilians in the Gaza Strip

US President Joe Biden, who has so far firmly supported the offensive, called for an immediate ceasefire in a telephone conversation with Netanyahu after Israel attacks against a charity convoy World Central Kitchen this week when seven volunteers were killed.

Biden “has made clear that Israel needs to announce and implement a series of specific, concrete and measurable measures to address civilian harm, humanitarian suffering and the safety of aid workers,” the White House said in a statement.

“He explained that U.S. policy toward the Gaza Strip will be determined by our assessment of Israel’s immediate actions on these measures,” he added.

Washington expects Israeli measures to change in the coming hours

The White House statement reflected a sharp change in Biden’s tone and marked the first time the United States has offered to condition its support.

So Biden channeled his own frustration, along with growing pressure from his left-wing political base, to stop the killings and reduce hunger among innocent Palestinian civilians.

White House spokesman John Kirby briefed reporters after the call. He didn’t want to give details about what specific changes the United States will make to its policy towards Israel and the Gaza Strip.

Kirby said Washington expected to see an announcement about Israel’s measures in the “coming hours and days.”

Israel attacked the convoy World Central Kitchen

On Monday, Israel carried out an attack that killed seven workers of the humanitarian organization World Central Kitchen in the Gaza Strip.

The White House described Biden as outraged and heartbroken by the attack, but before Thursday’s call, the president had made no fundamental changes to Washington’s strong support for Israel in its bombing of the Gaza Strip.

Biden asked Netanyahu for ceasefire in Gaza to protect civilians: Blinken

In Brussels, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Israel “must meet this moment” by increasing humanitarian assistance and ensuring the safety of those who cooperate.

“If we don’t see the changes that we need to see, then there will be changes in our policies,” Blinken told reporters.

Additionally, he said Biden asked Netanyahu for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip to protect innocent civilians.

In a call with Netanyahu today, Biden told him that “an immediate ceasefire is necessary to stabilize and improve the humanitarian situation and protect innocent civilians,” Blinken said.

He also called on him to allow his negotiators to reach an “agreement for the immediate return home of hostages” abducted by Hamas since October 7. (Reuters and EFE)
