In a historic act, the UN Human Rights Council (UN) voted for adopt a resolution aimed at protect the rights of intersex peoplethe first initiative of its kind.

Twenty-four countries voted in favor, 23 abstained and none voted against. resolution led by Finland, South Africa, Chile and Australia.

The resolution calls on statescombat discrimination, violence and harmful practices against people with congenital differences in sexual characteristics and eliminate their root causes.”

It also helps intersex people “enjoy the highest level of physical and mental health possible.”

It also asks the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights to release a report “detailing discriminatory laws and policies, acts of violence and harmful practices against people with inherent differences in sexual characteristics around the world.”

The findings of this report will be discussed by the Council at a round table, which will bring together states, regional mechanisms, health professionals and other institutions and civil society organizations, including those representing intersex people.

Human Rights Watch, which called the initiative groundbreaking, said it demonstrates “growing international determination to combat the rights violations faced by people born with differences in their sex characteristics.”

“This resolution marks another milestone in the way international organizations view the rights of intersex people,” the 35 civil society organizations that make up the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex Association (ILGA) said in a statement.

“With this vote, the first official UN report on the human rights situation of people with inherited sex variations will raise awareness of this issue.”

What does it mean to be intersex?
