A few have been informed about the upcoming launch of Google’s Find My Device feature. This allows you to track objects via Bluetooth.

Google announced a major update to Find My Device during I/O last year, and now it appears to be finally rolling out. In an email discovered by 9to5Google, Google said the network would launch “in a few days.” After the update, Find My Device also works with Bluetooth and you can locate many more objects, even if they are offline. The current feature in Android only allows you to find your phone when it’s connected to WiFi.

Protection from stalkers

Google reportedly wanted to launch the network last summer, but Apple put a stop to it. Both tech giants worked together on a standard to protect Find My features on Android and iOS from stalkers. If your device detects a suspicious tracker, you will receive a notification and instructions on how to disable that tracker. Now that Apple appears to have finally added this protection to iOS 17.5, the red carpet has been rolled out for Google to introduce Find My Device.

Some selected people have already received an email about this. Since no one in our editorial team has the email in question, we cannot say with 100% certainty whether the function will also be rolled out in our country. Google will not confirm this otherwise for the time being. However, according to the email, the rollout is coming soon: “in a few days” means the feature should be available early next week.

Find your device

Those lucky enough to receive the email will also be able to view and manage Find My Device settings. You can choose whether you want to register your device on the network to use the function offline, where Google uses an opt-out system and this is activated by default.

When you use the Find My Device network, your device shares location information with nearby devices as long as they are also connected to the network. Other devices point you in the right direction, but only the rightful owner of the device sees the exact location of the device or tracker. If you disable it, you’ll have to make do with the last saved locations when the device was online.
