Several tech giants are joining forces to form a consortium that aims to address the impact of AI on jobs. Although they do not believe there will be major job losses, they do expect the impact on existing work to be significant.

Their representatives always downplay the impact of AI on employment in discussions, but everyone agrees that AI will also change existing jobs. The World Economic Forum was previously less positive and estimates that 83 million jobs will disappear over the next five years, while only 69 million new jobs will be created.

Whatever the future holds, it seems like a good idea to thoroughly examine the impact of AI on work. The aim of the consortium is to provide organizations with knowledge about the effects of AI and to equip employees with the necessary knowledge to use AI. Collaboration is encouraged by the US-EU Trade and Technology Council Talent for Growth Task Force.

In a first phase, the consortium will examine the impact of AI on 56 ICT jobs and then make recommendations. The participants want to cover the majority of the most popular IT jobs. The idea is to train people in new and relevant skills as needed. Many of the participating companies have already attracted hundreds or thousands of people in recent years. The first phase should end with a report with applicable findings.

Education and money

The consortium has several other specific goals:

• Cisco aims to train 25 million people with digital skills and cybersecurity skills by 2032;
• IBM will equip 30 million people with digital skills by 2030, including two million focused on AI;
• Microsoft’s goal is to train ten million people from underrepresented communities with digital skills for jobs in the digital economy by 2025;
• By the same date, SAP will increase the skills of two million people worldwide;
• And finally, Google is providing 25 million euros to fund AI training in Europe.
