He the government of Ecuador confirmed this Friday evening Former Vice President Jorge Glas Espinel arrested after broke into the Mexican embassy in Quito.

Below is the full statement.

Nacional informs citizens that Jorge Glas Espinel, sentenced to prison by the Ecuadorian justice system, was arrested this evening and placed at the disposal of the competent authorities.

Each embassy has a single purpose: to serve as a diplomatic space with the goal of strengthening relations between countries.

No criminal can be considered politically persecuted. Jorge Glas was sentenced to forced execution and received an arrest warrant issued by the competent authorities.

Ecuador is facing a non-international armed conflict, the consequences of which for democracy and civil peace will only increase if actions that impinge on the rule of law, national sovereignty or interference in the country’s internal affairs continue or are condoned.

Having abused the immunities and privileges granted to the diplomatic mission in which Jorge Glas was located, and by granting diplomatic asylum contrary to the generally accepted legal framework, his arrest continued.

Ecuador is a sovereign country and we will not allow any criminal to go unpunished.

We reaffirm our respect for the Mexican people, who share our feelings regarding the fight against corruption affecting our countries.

AMLO suspends diplomatic relations with Ecuador after Mexican embassy hack

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador suspended diplomatic relations with Ecuador after the Andean country’s police raided the Mexican embassy in Quito.

He said he had instructed Foreign Minister Alicia Barcenas to act legally.

He called it “a flagrant violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty.”

“This is a flagrant violation of international law and Mexican sovereignty, which is why I have instructed our chancellor to issue a statement regarding this authoritarian act, to act lawfully, and to immediately announce the suspension of diplomatic relations with the government of Ecuador.” .

Police entered the Mexican Embassy in Quito to arrest Glas

A group of Ecuadorian police officers stormed the Mexican embassy in Quito to arrest Jorge Glas, whom the Mexican government today granted asylum after he entered this mission last December.

Several policemen climbed the walls and fences of the diplomatic headquarters and then abandoned the residence, which had been closely guarded by the military from the start, during a period of tension between both governments.

The head of the embassy’s foreign policy and political department, Roberto Canseco, said in statements to journalists that Ecuadorian agents broke in and attacked the security of the diplomatic headquarters.

“This is completely unacceptable, this cannot happen, this is barbaric,” Canseco said and assured that the agents hit him when he confronted them to try to prevent them from invading the space of the Mexican Embassy in Quito.
