Apple modifies App Store to allow retro video game emulators

Apple is under a lot of pressure to open up its ecosystem, so the Cupertino giant has announced that it will update its app store, the so-called App Store, enabling the presence of retro video game emulators and that they can offer downloadable games, although the company has been categorical in stating that these games must comply with “all applicable laws”, a clear indication that it will not tolerate the distribution of pirated material through its means, either directly or indirectly.

The latest news that Apple introduced in the App Store should open the door to iOS emulators that are currently only available for Android. This change is important because emulators have been banned from the App Store, forcing iPhone or iPad owners to jailbreak or apply workarounds to achieve similar results.

These transfers by Apple are said to be a result of the pressure it is receiving to open up its ecosystem, which is strictly controlled by it. In the European Union, the Digital Markets Act (DMA) recently came into force, which the apple-bitten giant is complying with in a not very fair way, and it is already costing it the opening of an investigation by the community body. On the other hand, there is a lawsuit filed by the United States Department of Justice (DOJ), because this institution believes that Apple has adopted anti-competitive behavior that harms consumers and developers.

App Store apps

Another change applied to the App Store is that it now authorizes “super apps” that include several in one, such as WeChat. Now Apple allows minigames and widgets to be loaded within another, but these must be HTML5 and cannot be native. We’ll see if the authorities like it, but given the DMA’s approach, it doesn’t make much sense for the European Union to approve it.

In short, Apple is loosening the restrictions it applied to the App Store, opening the door to emulators. Legal aside, it’s very likely that Nintendo isn’t too fond of this change, especially since the Japanese corporation is campaigning against Yuzu and its derivatives.
