More than twelve hours after Ecuadorian police entered the Mexican embassy to stop Jorge Glasformer Vice President Rafael Correa (2007-2017), condemnation of this act in the Ecuadorian political sphere is almost just beginning. Correismo and the indigenous movementwhile almost all the leaders and forces of the right and center remain silent.

The police entry into the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Quito came after the government Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador granted Glas the political asylum he requested on the grounds that he had been politically persecuted and a victim of “legitimacy” (the use of the judicial apparatus against political opponents).

Glas was issued an arrest warrant and placed in preventive detention because he accused of embezzlement (embezzlement of public funds) in connection with the reconstruction of the coastal province of Manabi after the 2016 earthquake, as well as serving an eight-year prison sentence for two active convictions for bribery and illegal association.

The events come at a time of peak tension between Mexico and Ecuador after the government of Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa expelled Mexican Ambassador Raquel Serur following statements by López Obrador alleging an electoral effect assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio with the triumph of Noboa, who defeated Correista candidate Luisa Gonzalez in the second round.

Correismo calls it “barbaric.”

The Civil Revolution, the party of which Correa is the leader, assured in a statement that “what has happened in the last few hours in the country This is barbaric and contrary to basic norms. and fundamental principles of civilized coexistence of international law and diplomatic law.”

“These disgraceful actions represent a very serious insult to Mexico and the international community, whose peaceful and civilized coexistence is based on the law. in addition to insulting the dignity of Ecuador and its traditions as a defender of international law“Human rights,” noted Civil Revolution.

According to Correismo, this precedent will have a “very negative impact” on Ecuador’s image in the international sphere and made Noboa responsible for the security, as well as the physical and psychological integrity of Glas.

Correa emphasized the unusual nature of the Ecuadorian authorities’ infiltration of Mexico’s diplomatic headquarters in Quito to arrest Glas, saying that “This is unprecedented in the history of Latin America.”

“Even in the worst dictatorial regimes, the country’s embassy was not subjected to violence. We do not live in a state of law, but in a state of barbarism, with an improvised system that confuses the homeland with one of its banana farms,” Correa said, referring to current President Daniel Noboa, whose family owns the largest banana store in the country, the first in world exporter of these fruits.

For her part, the President of the Civil Revolution, Luisa Gonzalez, noted that the images Ecuadorian police forcibly enter the Mexican embassy “They will go all over the world.”

“They will go down in history as the greatest barbarity of a makeshift government, a capricious millionaire and a chancellor who believes that she still runs Aerogal or Equair,” Gonzalez said, addressing Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld, a businesswoman. and his past as head of Ecuadorian airlines.

Indigenous people speak of ‘fascist act’

From my side, Confederation of Indigenous Peoples of Ecuador (Conaye)the largest civil society organization in the country, noted that “the attack on the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador is a fascist act of extreme seriousness, violating diplomatic relations and international law.”

“The Ecuadorian government’s actions to illegally enter the Mexican Embassy in Quito represent a clear violation of Mexican sovereignty and a complete disregard for international standards. It is alarming to see how the authoritarian and fascist government of Ecuador resorts to force to secure his political spoilsYes,” Konaie said.

Sonnenholzner condemns the invasion

Apart from Correism and the indigenous movement, the main reaction came from former vice president and former presidential candidate Otto Sonnenholzner, who reminded that “the sovereignty of embassies is inviolable.”

“Although Glas should not have been granted asylum, the invasion of the Mexican embassy was a serious mistake,” Sonneholzner said, given that Loez Obrador “illegally interfered in Ecuador’s internal affairs, but Ecuador’s reaction should not have been impulsive.”

“Management requires determination, but also prudence. This incident puts us in a very bad position internationally,” admitted the former vice president, who held this position during the presidency of Lenin Moreno (2017-2021).

So far, neither Moreno nor his successor, conservative Guillermo Lasso (2021-2023), have commented on this event.

Neither did other forces close to the Noboa government, such as the conservative Social Christian Party (PSC) or the Construier movement, whose presidential candidate was the murdered Fernando Villavicencio.
