Secretary General Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagrocalled on Mexico and Ecuador for “dialogue” and expected him to request a meeting Standing Council body to eliminate tension between both countries.

The OAS General Secretariat, led by Almagro, issued a statement this Saturday. call for “dialogue between the parties to resolve their differences” and deemed it “necessary” for a meeting of the Washington-based organization’s Permanent Council to take place.

In addition, Almagro condemned the decision of the Ecuadorian National Police to raid the Friday evening at Mexican Embassy in Quito and arrest the former vice president of Ecuador Jorge Glasswho was granted political asylum by the Mexican government just a few hours ago and who is accused in Ecuador of embezzlement of public funds.

In his statement, Almagro expressed his rejection of “any disruptive action or it puts you at risk” immunity enjoyed by diplomatic missions and reaffirmed the “commitment” that all states should not invoke domestic law to justify non-compliance with their international obligations.

“International law is the norm of conduct of states in their mutual relations” and in this sense, strict compliance by all states with the rules governing the protection, respect and inviolability of the premises of diplomatic missions and consular posts.

In this context, Almagro expressed his “solidarity with those who have been victims about inappropriate actions that affected the Mexican Embassy in Ecuador.”

In addition, they recalled that the OAS had recently “victim” of a similar attack in Managuaand in neither case are they “acceptable ambiguitybut the most complete compliance with international law“.

The president Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorannounced formal severance of diplomatic relations with Ecuador viewing the invasion of the Quito embassy as a violation of national sovereignty and international law.
