“Even Pinochet did not dare to invade the embassy”: daughter of Salvador Allende

Chilean senator Isabel Allende, daughter of the ousted socialist president Salvador Allende, referred to invasion from the Ecuadorian police to Embassy of Mexico in Quito.

He stated that even Dictator Augusto Pinochet “dared” invade embassies during the coup d’etat and subsequent dictatorship that lasted 17 years.

“Not even Pinochet dared to invade an embassy that would have provided shelter like the one we received in 1973,” the senator wrote on her X account.

Following Allende’s coup d’état and suicide at La Moneda Palace on September 11, 1973, the former socialist president’s family took refuge in the Mexican embassy in Santiago before going into exile in the North American country.

The Pinochet dictatorship, which lasted until 1990, left more than 40 thousand victims, including at least 3,200 were executed, detained, or disappeared.

Hours earlier, Chile’s progressive President Gabriel Boric sent a “brotherly hug” to his Mexican counterpart Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and called the Ecuadorian government’s arrest operation of former Vice President Jorge Glas “unacceptable.”

Ecuadorian police stormed the Mexican embassy in Quito on Friday and the same day detained Glas, vice president between 2013 and 2017 along with Rafael Correa (2007-2017) and then at the start of the government of Lenin Moreno (2017-2017). 2021). after which the Aztec government granted him political asylum.

Glas, 54 and considered Correa’s right-hand man, entered the embassy last December and sought asylum soon after.

The politician is being prosecuted for alleged embezzlement of funds in the so-called “reconstruction case” of Manabi province, hardest hit by the massive 2016 earthquake, and a judge has ordered his arrest and placement in preventive detention after he remained in the Mexican embassy.

After the arrest, Lopez Obrador announced the official severance of diplomatic relations with Ecuador, considering the invasion of the embassy in Quito a violation of national sovereignty and international law. (EFE)
