Google implemented desktop mode support in Android 10 in 2019. However, at that time, this mode did not have many features and was mainly aimed at developers testing their products in multi-screen usage scenarios. It looks like this may soon change and Android will have a full-fledged desktop mode.

According to network sources, Google’s developers have already made some progress in implementing multi-window desktop mode support in Android. This is evidenced by a number of innovations discovered in one of the latest test builds of Android 14 QPR3 2.1. For example, the developers added a new title bar to the menu that appears when you click on the corresponding icon at the top of the program and works in full screen mode. In this menu, you can adjust the parameters of full screen mode, as well as options for switching to split screen mode or optional docking mode of windows.

The last option assumes that the user can freely drag windows around the workspace and change their size. In addition, the “edge anchor” function appeared, which allows you to attach the application window to the left or right edge of the desktop. You can easily switch between full screen and free mode. At the same time, the positioning of windows has not yet been implemented and there are no switches for connecting them.

Most likely, these and other desktop mode changes will be implemented in Android 15, which will be released in the second half of the year. It is possible that Google will offer these innovations within the scope of improvements for Pixel 9 smartphones, which will most likely be officially introduced in the fall.
