Thanks to a recent leak, we have the first image of the Zen 5 processor. This is the technical sample that it uses same IHS as Zen 4 processorsand which will therefore be fully compatible with all existing cooling solutions today that work with the AM5 socket.

The Zen 5 architecture is also known by the codename Granite Ridge and as I have told you on previous occasions, everything indicates that it will be launched later this year, although its introduction could take place a little earlier. Nothing is confirmed, no doubt about it Computex would be a gala night introduce this new generation of processors.

We can’t see it because IHS is blocking the view, but it’s most likely that all Zen 5 processors will repeat the gold design of the CPU chiplets, because it helps improve heat transfer between the packaging and the integrated cooler. It will be interesting to see what temperatures this new generation reaches, especially after increasing the transistor density which will occur when jumping to TSMC’s 3nm node.

In theory, this Zen 5 processor is configured 8 cores and 16 threads and has a TDP of 170 watts. That means we could face Ryzen 7 9700X, i.e. ahead of the successor Ryzen 7 7700X, which is also configured with 8 cores and 16 threads, despite having a TDP of 105 watts. This difference in TDP is important, since we are talking about a 65 watt increase, and could be motivated by a significant increase in operating frequencies.

We know that AMD has been sending out technical samples of Zen 5 processors for some time, and thanks to other previous leaks, we were also able to identify models configured with 6 cores and 12 threads. Most likely, the company will repeat the same portfolio of lines and products of the previous generation, which means The basic Zen 5 processor will again have 6 cores and 12 threadsand that the most powerful model will continue to have 16 cores and 32 threads.

All Zen 5 processors it will be compatible with current AM5 motherboards, although installing them will require updating our motherboard’s BIOS to a higher version, which we expect will be available shortly before the official launch of said processors. AMD will launch new chipsets within the 700 series, but the 600 series chipsets still have a lot of life left in them.
