Expanding a telecommunications network in various European countries, including Belgium, costs money. Digi will therefore receive 750 million euros from the sale of its Spanish fiber optic network.

Digi Belgium’s goal is to become a fully-fledged fourth telecommunications operator in our country, alongside Proximus, Telenet and Orange. The mobile Internet will have its own network via an MVNO offer with Proximus; the first fiber optics have already been installed in Brussels.

Spanish sale

That ambition costs money, and that’s partly why Digi Communications, which together with Citymesh forms Digi Belgium, is selling its Spanish fiber network. This will reach around 4.3 million households. De Tijd knows this. A consortium of investors is taking over from Digi for 750 million euros.

The Romanian Digi doesn’t say what the money is for. It seems self-evident that it serves the development of the mobile network in France as well as supporting the telecommunications ambitions in our country and Portugal. Expanding these networks requires significant investment, so the additional millions represent a welcome reprieve.
