The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed on Tuesday new drone attack on Zaporozhye nuclear power plant, occupied by Russia since March 2022, which shows the situation is “extremely serious.”

“The IAEA today informed the Zaporozhye NPP about the drone attack at the factory training center adjacent to the site,” indicates a message from the UN nuclear agency regarding X.

“The report of an explosion is consistent with the observations of the IAEA team. This time there is no direct threat to nuclear safety. But the latest incident once again emphasizes the extremely serious situation,” says Argentinean Rafael Grossi, Director General of the IAEA.

The plant, where the IAEA team is present, was subjected to attacks in recent dayswith crossed accusations of Moscow and Kyiv for involvement in what happened.

On Sunday the IAEA confirmed “reckless” drone attack on factory. Rosatom, Russia’s state nuclear energy company, earlier said three people were injured in a Ukrainian drone attack on the facility.

Yesterday, the Ukrainian state nuclear energy company Energoatom denied information that Ukraine attacked a nuclear power plant using drones on Sunday and accused the Kremlin of lying and “manipulating” the IAEA to blame Kyiv.

Ukraine claims that Russia, which seized the plant in March 2022, turned the plant “into a military base.”

Since the beginning of the war, Russia and Ukraine have repeatedly accused each other of jeopardize nuclear safety, while the IAEA warned that an attack on the plant could lead to a “nuclear incident”.

Currently, five of the six reactors at the plant, which was Europe’s largest when it was operating at full capacity, They are in cold stop mode.

Since the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine, the IAEA has been demanding the creation of a safety zone around the plant to avoid nuclear risks.
