UK: MPs hope to make abortion a real women’s right

(RFI).- If the amendment is approved, Abortion is being decriminalized in England And Welsh. It will also establish legal safeguards to prevent new restrictions. Still abortion always been crime punishment for women and the health workers who help them. This is a legacy of the Victorian era. Abortion is allowed only under certain conditions, including if there is a danger to the mother’s life. Doctors often consider an unwanted pregnancy to be dangerous, so in practice it can usually be terminated before 24 weeks pregnant.

For Labor Party member Stella Creasy, who signed the amendment, the aim is to ensure the government cannot restrict abortion, which the UN considers a fundamental right, for political purposes.

Prosecution for illegal abortion

This “tolerance” has not prevented the criminalization of abortion in practice. Between 2012 and 2022 67 people were prosecuted for illegal abortion. Last year, a mother was jailed for terminating her pregnancy late in labor. Each year, dozens of women and girls are investigated for having abortions, which the amendment’s signatories say constitutes an invasion of confidentiality and quite the process traumatic. Hence the desire of the signatories to end criminalization, in particular to allow women to have abortions without having to justify themselves.

The amendment will be discussed in parliament next week. As is usually the case in such controversial issues, parties will not issue voting instructions, and MPs will be able to vote “according to their conscience.” But not everyone supports the initiative. Other Conservative MPs introduced amendments to reduce the period of access to abortion from 24 to 22 weeks. This amendment was signed by 36 people, which is one more than in favor of decriminalization.

It must be taken into account that the right to abortion is not uniform throughout the country. Great Britain: if the situation in Scotland is similar to that in England and Wales, then in Northern Ireland decriminalized.
