Almagro condemns Ecuador’s invasion of the Mexican embassy;  “I can’t create a precedent”

Member countries of the Organization of American States (OAS) rejected this Tuesday Ecuadorian police raid on the Mexican embassy arrest former Vice President Jorge in Quito glass.

OAS Secretary-General Luis Almagro reaffirmed that international law must be respected and that diplomatic headquarters are inviolable.

He added that the violation by Ecuadorian police This cannot be justified by internal laws.

Almagro pointed out that the attack on the Mexican embassy violates fundamental principles of universal, American, conventional and customary international law.

“There is no doubt that the actions of the Ecuadorian authorities towards the Mexican diplomatic headquarters seriously affect the fundamental principles of the international legal orderso valuable to the inter-American system since its inception: the inviolability of diplomatic missions and the peaceful resolution of disputes.”

He assured that the inviolability of diplomatic missions has been a central customary norm in relations between states since time immemorial.

“Nothing justifies breaking it; To accept it means to erase with the stroke of a pen the most basic rule, without which diplomatic relations between our countries are impossible.

“Instances of violation of this norm are remembered by everyone as indelible stains for those who committed it.”

Almagro calls on Mexico and Ecuador to find a peaceful solution

At the first extraordinary session of the OAS Permanent Council, Almagro called on both countries to find a peaceful solution to the disputes.

“The use of force, unlawful entry into a diplomatic mission or detention of an asylum seeker is not a peaceful way to resolve this situation.

“The fifth chapter of our Charter is decisive: “International disputes between Member States shall be subject to the procedures for peaceful settlement specified in this Charter.”

“Let’s not let what happened in Quito remain a precedent”

Luis Almagro called member countries of the Organization of American States so as not tolet what happened in Quito this weekend stand as a precedent.

“We must demand that the path of international legality be resumed in full respect for its fundamental norms and that the situation be returned to its previous state before opening the way to recourse to peaceful means of resolving possible disputes.”

Second session of the OAS

The second extraordinary meeting of the OAS Permanent Council will be held on Wednesday, April 10, in Washington to find an amicable solution to the severance of bilateral relations between Ecuador and Mexico. (According to EFE)
