LCL will build a fifth data center in Diegem, above Brussels. This data center will be part of the Brussels NorthWebsite of the Belgian colocation specialist. The construction of the new premises represents an investment of 30 million euros. The construction of the building must be completed within two years.
LCL, like other data center specialists large and small, is attempting to meet the ever-increasing need for colocation space. New European sustainability regulations will force many companies with an on-premise data center to look for alternatives, as future reporting and efficiency requirements apply to data centers with a capacity of 0.5 MW or more. Colocation specialists like LCL can accommodate servers more sustainably and efficiently.
Sustainability is therefore an important factor for the new data center. The building will have new and better cooling systems with alternative cooling technologies. LCL states that it is heavily concerned with heat recovery, but it is not clear whether and how this applies to this new building.
LCL says its fifth site at the Diegem site will be ready for liquid cooling. This is also important: Regardless of European objectives, modern HPC and AI servers have a very high density, with enormous power supply and heat dissipation requirements per rack. Specialists like LCL, but also Digital Realty, find that water cooling is the only solution for such systems.
The new data center receives a Tier 3 certificate and brings together 41 telecommunications operators for customers. LCL speaks of employing 42 people.
