At the Cloud Next event last Tuesday, Google introduced Gemini Code Assist, a business-focused AI assistant for AI code development.
Gemini Code Assist is a direct competitor to GitHub Copilot, which became generally available earlier this year. The new AI support is based on the Gemini 1.5 Pro language model and helps developers build, deploy and manage applications. This new tool can be applied in various IDEs and does not use prompts or responses to train the model.
Code Assist is a rebrand and major update to Google’s older Duet AI service. This new Gemini Code Assist can be used in an IDE such as VS Code, IntelliJ, Cloud Workstations or Cloud Shell Editor. The AI assistant provides coding support in various languages, writes additions to your code, generates comment blocks, and can detect, understand, and document errors. In addition, Code Assist provides answers to your prompts including sources. Gemini Code Assist also helps troubleshoot issues in the Google Cloud Console.
Gemini 1.5 Pro, one of Google’s largest LLMs that can accurately process up to millions of tokens, is the foundation of Gemini Code Assist. According to Google, the model does not use your prompts or the answers to train the model.
