Alexander Mayorkas, Secretary of Homeland Security from the United States, admitted that the border with Mexico It’s in “a crisis“However, he reiterated that the only one who can solve the problem is Congress.

The man in charge of US immigration policy took part in two hearings, one in the House of Representatives and another in the Senate, to present the Joe Biden administration’s 2025 budgets for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

Their appearance matches political process (impeachment), nominated in February by the lower house with a Republican majority, for leadership of border policyand which should pass in the coming days through the Democratic-controlled Senate.

Mayorkas similarly criticized Congress’s rejection in February of a bill negotiated by a group of Democratic and Republican senators that sought to tighten border policies.

“Only Congress can fix our broken and outdated system. Only Congress can meet our need for more Border Patrol agents, asylum officers, immigration judges, facilities and technology.”

The Republican Party and its White House candidate, former President Donald Trump, have made migration the centerpiece of their campaign as one of the biggest issues troubling voters and blame Biden for “open borders.”

For his part, Biden reversed Trump policies that contributed to the rush to return migrants and launched humanitarian permit programs for people from multiple countries while limiting asylum requests at the border.
