The recall affects 2022 and 2023 Bronco Sport SUVs and 2022 Escape SUVs. All of them have 1.5 liter engines.
In documents submitted to US safety regulators, Ford said fuel injectors could crack and gasoline or vapors could accumulate near ignition sources, leading to a fire.
Dealers will install a tube that allows gasoline to flow from hot surfaces to the underside of the vehicle and update engine management software to detect pressure drops in the fuel injection system. According to the company, the new software will also turn on a warning light on the dashboard. NHTSA documents filed by Ford say the problem only occurs in about 1 percent of SUVs.
In the documents, the company reports five fires under the hood and 14 warranty replacements of fuel injectors, but there are no reports of accidents or injuries.
The company also said it will extend warranty coverage for cracked fuel injectors so owners who experience the problem can get new ones. Ford said repairs are available now and details of the extended warranty will be announced in June.
