Meta proudly presents the MTIA v2 chip: an AI accelerator designed to make internal ranking and advertising models smarter and more efficient.
With the introduction of MTIA v2, Meta shows once again how much advertising is worth. This is an AI accelerator that powers ranking and advertising systems. For Meta, investing time and money into developing its own custom chip for AI acceleration of these workloads is worth it because it shows how important they are.
MTIA stands for Meta Training and Inference Accelerator. Last year, Meta introduced the first version of the chip. The computing power and bandwidth of the accelerator are doubled in MTIA v2 compared to the first version. Meta is proud of the new chip and has provided a nice blog post full of details, even though the accelerator is not intended for use outside the company.
By producing its own chip, the company is using TSMC’s valuable production capacity. The MTIA v2 is baked on the chipmaker’s 5nm line. The thing has a TDP of 90 watts, compared to 25 watts for the MTIA v1. This corresponds to a processing power of 354 TFLOPS (INT8), compared to 102.4 TFLOPS for the MTIA v1.
