Apple today announced that it will soon allow customers and independent repair shops to use parts when repairing their devices, helping to extend product life, reduce e-waste, and lower the impact on the environment. Used auto parts will be calibrated at the factory and provide the same functionality and safety as new genuine Apple parts.

“We are always looking for new ways to deliver the best experience to our customers while reducing our impact on the planet, and a key part of this is developing products that last.”, — said John Ternus (John Ternus), Apple’s vice president of hardware. — Innovations in product design and manufacturing will enable repairs to be made using used Apple parts without compromising users’ safety, security or privacy. “We are excited to offer our customers more options and convenience while helping to extend the life of our products and parts.”

Apple has done a lot of work over the past two years to enable the reuse of parts such as biometric sensors used for Face ID or Touch ID. Starting this fall, original Apple parts, new or used, will be calibrated directly in devices after the part is installed. The repair process will be simplified; Customers and service providers will no longer need to provide the device’s serial number when ordering parts for repairs that do not require replacement of the motherboard.

The process of verifying the authenticity of a part and gathering information about it, often called “matching,” is critical to protecting the privacy and security of iPhone owners. Apple will extend Activation Lock to iPhone parts to prevent parts of stolen devices from being used. If a device under repair detects that a part installed in it was taken from a device with Activation Lock enabled, the calibration capabilities of that part will be limited.

As the device’s lifespan extends, Apple aims to provide subsequent owners with information about repairs and used parts, which appear in the Parts and Service History section in iOS Settings. From autumn 2024, information on original spare parts used in repairs will be added here.

Over the past five years, Apple has nearly doubled the number of service centers by providing access to genuine Apple parts and tools and training more than 10,000 Apple Authorized Service Providers. Launched in 2022, the self-repair program now supports 40 Apple products in 24 languages in 33 countries and regions. Provides access to manuals, genuine Apple parts, and tools used at Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Centers.
