Former Vice President of Ecuador Jorge Glas will appeal the court’s decision to keep him in prisondespite the judges confirming that his detention was “arbitrary and unlawful”.

Glas, twice convicted of corruption and now facing new charges, was arrested during a police raid at the Mexican embassy in Quito, where he had been living since December.

The former vice president’s lawyer, Sonia Vera, thanked the international community and said their support was vital to have the detention declared illegal.

“However, Jorge remains in custody (…) We will appeal until we achieve his freedom,” he noted in X.

Jorge Glas attempted suicide

Former President Rafael Correa said Wednesday that Glas, who was his vice president from 2013 to 2017, attempted suicide and organized hunger strike as a sign of protest against his conclusion, which Vera confirmed.

Glass was taken to the hospital on Monday and returned to jail the next day.

In a video posted Wednesday by Vera, Glass recounted his arrest, claiming that police severely beat him while detained at the Mexican embassy.

At a court hearing on Thursday, Ecuadorian police denied torturing Glas during his arrest but said force was used gradually because of the former vice president’s resistance.

The government has said it has evidence that Glass planned the escape, although it has not yet presented evidence.

Glas has two final convictions in corruption cases in 2017 and 2020, as well as a preventive detention order on charges of embezzling funds during the reconstruction of Manabi province after the devastating earthquake in 2016.
