Western Digital shows the Ultrastar Transporter: a full-fledged storage server with a maximum capacity of 368 TB, equipped with a case and handle for easy transport.

Western Digital launches the Ultrastar Transporter. This is a storage server with space for 368 TB of NVMe flash storage, supported by a 12-core processor. The thing is equipped with a transport case with wheels and a carrying handle and weighs less than 15 kg. Although the server is intended for use in a rack, mobility is the main feature of the device.

With the Ultrastar Transporter, WD is focusing on organizations that need high-performance storage in remote locations. This includes researchers, but also soldiers. The server supports on-site storage needs and is immediately suitable for transferring data back to civilization when the required connectivity is not available.

Easier than the Internet

Sending hundreds of terabytes of data over the Internet is rarely a very practical option. That’s why WD is also considering cloud providers for this solution. The Ultrastar Transporter is suitable for retrieving data from a local location and bringing it to the data center for initial synchronization. That’s not far-fetched: all major cloud providers already have such solutions in their portfolio. AWS is even willing to send a truck to pick up your data.

WD equips the server with two 200GbE ports and states that the device is FIPS 140-2 compliant. A TPM 2.0 chip is also available. The manufacturer offers a three-year guarantee, but does not provide any recommended prices.
