Bogota, April 15 (EFE). – Colombian President Gustavo Petro announced this Monday the suspension of the next binational cabinet meeting with Ecuador, scheduled for this month, following the attack by the police of that country on the Mexican embassy in Quito, on April 5, an event that he called “serious.”

“The bilateral cabinet work with Ecuador planned by President Lasso (sic) has been suspended,” Petro said on his X account.

Peter made this statement while commenting on the news that Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa assured in an interview with the Australian channel SBS that he does not regret ordering an attack on the embassy in order to arrest Jorge Glas, former vice-president Rafael Correa. (2007-2017), who was granted asylum by the Mexican government a few hours ago.

Faced with this violation, the government of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador severed relations with Ecuador and convicted it at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, finding that its sovereignty as well as international law had been violated.

“I think what happened at the Mexican embassy is very serious. The reconstruction of international law is necessary if we want world peace,” Petro added.

A suspended meeting of the binational cabinet to discuss issues of interest to both sides was scheduled for April 25 in the Colombian city of Ipiales, in the department of Nariño, which borders Ecuador.

The meeting, the twelfth between the two governments, was agreed on April 2, three days before the embassy attack, at a meeting held in Bogota by Ecuadorian Foreign Minister Gabriela Sommerfeld with her Colombian counterpart Luis Gilberto. . Murillo.

The meeting was also attended by Colombian Justice Minister Nestor Osuna and Public Administration Minister and Chief of Staff Noboa Arturo Felix.

The suspension of the bilateral cabinet meeting comes ahead of a closed meeting that the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac) will hold tomorrow to discuss the violation of the Mexican embassy in Quito.
