Although the Japanese company has not officially confirmed its development, there have been many rumors and the latest one is coming to us The Verge. The media cited sources familiar with the project to confirm the console is “very real” and that Sony has asked developers to ensure compatibility with their games and support the enhancements the new hardware will offer, such as ray tracing, to earn the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” designation if “offer significant improvements”.

PlayStation 5 Pro specs

In recent months, we’ve been closely following all the information coming out of Sony’s new console, and last week we offered you a special that summarized everything we know so far in the form of ten questions and answers. Virtually everything we said is confirmed The Verge.

The PlayStation 5 Pro, codenamed “Project Trinity,” will be a an improved version of the current PS5, but not its replacement. Sony will continue to produce both models. “Trinity is the ultimate version of the PlayStation 5”, the documents state. Sony believes that potentially all games will be compatible with both models, and that existing titles can be tweaked to perform at higher resolutions and frame rates in specific games.

PlayStation 5 Pro

Sony will once again rely on AMD’s ZEN2 architecture for CPUs, but will have a a major update on the GPU side. The company expects the GPU processing on the PS5 Pro to be “around 45 percent faster than the standard PlayStation 5”, according to documents describing the upcoming console. The PS5 Pro’s GPU will be larger and use faster system memory to help improve ray tracing in games, a key feature of the new console.

As for the CPU, although it will be the same with 8 cores as the standard PS5, it will have a a special mode that increases its frequency to 3.85 GHz above the standard model’s 3.5 GHz. According to the documents, developers will be the ones to choose between the two modes for their games.

It will also improve Memory, from the current 448 GB/s to 576 GB/s of GDDR6 memory at 18 Gbps on the PS5 Pro, which the company says will mean a 28% increase in bandwidth. This gain “may be useful” for compatibility with the new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) from Sony. Basically, it’s Sony’s answer to NVIDIA DLSS or AMD FSR for improved frame rate and image quality.

Sony seems to be following the same strategy as the PS4, and after the ‘Slim’ version, all indications are that the PlayStation 5 Pro is on the way and that we will be able to buy it during the 2024 Christmas season, along with new games and more fixed to take advantage of its improvements in hardware.
