Glaze 2 is the successor to Glaze, a free software tool that uses machine learning to subtly change the pixels of an artwork, making the style of AI art generator models like Stable Diffusion perceived differently. The new version offers speed improvements and is also compatible with Mac. Artists want to send a message to AI companies that use their copyrighted works to train models.
Glaze was developed by University of Chicago researchers led by Ben Zhao to give artists a tool to protect their work from AI. After Glaze, the same researchers introduced Nightshade, which allows artists to intentionally alter their artwork in a way that renders it unusable. With this message they want to alert the AI giants to the misuse of copyrighted material.
More than a year later, the research team announces a new version of the tool: Glaze 2. The researchers promise some improvements that will allow users to create their images even faster. While Glaze took an average of 1.2 minutes to glaze an image on the Titan RTX GPU and 7.3 minutes on a single Intel i7 CPU, Glaze 2.0 offers a 50 to 100 percent speed increase depending on the user’s computer hardware.
Additionally, the changes in this new version will be less noticeable and it will now also protect “smooth-surfaced art,” such as cartoons. It also improves computing efficiency on most platforms and offers Mac GPU support.
Glaze 2.0 is now available for download for Windows 10/11, Apple Silicon and Intel.
