Adobe has launched an AI assistant for Reader and Acrobat that generates summaries and insights from PDF documents and answers questions.

Adobe has introduced a new AI assistant for its Reader and Acrobat software. This generative AI-based assistant is designed to help users work with PDF documents more efficiently. For example, you can automatically generate summaries and insights or ask questions. AI generation can also format information for use in emails, reports and presentations.

Integrated into existing Reader and Acrobat workflows, AI Assistant leverages the same AI and machine learning models as Acrobat’s Liquid Mode for a responsive reading experience on mobile devices.

The AI assistant offers features such as recommending and answering questions based on the contents of a PDF file, generating summaries, intelligent citations, easy document navigation, and formatting output for various purposes. In addition, Adobe ensures that user privacy and data security are respected and document content is not stored or used for training without permission.

In addition to PDFs, the AI Assistant can also be used with other document formats such as Word and PowerPoint. Adobe emphasizes the importance of security and information management. They developed the Assistant in accordance with Adobe’s AI ethics processes, with a focus on the safe and responsible use of generative AI in digital documents. How this will translate into practice remains to be seen.

The new features are now available to Acrobat Standard and Pro subscribers when they pay an additional $4.99 for the AI Assistant add-on. This is an introductory price that is valid until June 5, 2024. For now, only the English language is supported. The AI assistant is free for the Reader mobile application. Adobe emphasizes that this is a temporary measure, but unlike the desktop version, does not specify a deadline.

This article originally appeared on February 20, 2024, when AI Assistant was launched in beta. We have updated the article with new details after the application becomes generally available.
