Engineers of the company L3Harris Technologies have carried out the first optical tests of the mirrors of the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Nancy Grace Roman Telescope).
First, each of the telescope’s mirrors was tested separately, and then they were all evaluated together. The test showed that the mirrors directed light towards scientific instruments with high precision.
This photo shows the entire optical system of NASA’s Nancy Grace Rome Space Telescope. It consists of 10 mirrors, including the 7.9-foot (2.4-meter) main mirror seen at the base of the image, called the Imaging Optical Assembly (IOA). Engineers recently integrated and tested IOA at L3Harris Technologies in Rochester, New York.
In total, the new powerful telescope will receive 10 mirrors, the main part of which has a diameter of 2.4 meters. It will give the device the ability to take images with similar details as the Hubble telescope.
The Nancy Grace Novel will help astronomers look deeper than ever into the heart of the Milky Way, map more stars in our Galaxy, and search for exoplanets. The new telescope is expected to go into space in May 2027.
