The army of the Armed Forces of Ukraine began training on the development of HIMARS M142 launchers transmitted by the United States. This was reported by the Defense Blog. According to a senior US Department of Defense official, the first group of Ukrainian soldiers began training on how to deal with the MLRS in an unknown location outside the country.
Training for working with the American HIMARS high-mobility missile artillery systems will be carried out according to a special training plan. This was announced by Pentagon Deputy Chief of Staff Colin Cal during a briefing.
According to him, the training of the Ukrainian army in the use of these weapons will take several weeks. Direct training with the system will take three weeks, and the Ukrainian military will receive additional training in the maintenance of this weapon system.
According to US Deputy Secretary of Defense Colin Kahl, HIMARS has been previously deployed in Europe to begin training personnel to quickly deliver them to Ukraine and use these weapons as soon as possible.
On June 1, the United States approved a new military aid package to Ukraine that includes HIMARS missile artillery systems and jet munitions. Ukraine will receive weapons under the 700 million dollar aid package.
In general, the new aid package provides for the transfer of:
- Highly mobile HIMARS artillery missile systems and ammunition;
- Five counter-battery radars;
- Two air surveillance radars;
- 1,000 Javelin missiles and 50 command and launch units;
- 6,000 anti-tank guns;
- 15,000 155 mm artillery shells;
- four Mi-17 helicopters;
- 15 tactical vehicles;
- Spare parts and equipment.
M142 HIMARS (High-Motion Artillery Rocket System – as the chassis uses a 6-wheel tactical truck M1140 FMTV. The launcher can be used as a multiple rocket launcher (MLRS) and operational and tactical missile system with ammunition at various ranges. Source
