The bill, which passed by a vote of 360 to 58, is part of a comprehensive package of sanctions against foreign adversaries like Russia. The bill regarding TikTok, along with measures to provide military aid to Ukraine and Israel, as well as humanitarian aid to Gaza, are now under increased scrutiny.
The thing about this bill is that its inclusion in the relief package forces the Senate to address it with more urgency than if it were introduced as a separate bill.
It should also be noted that a particular document has more supporters than the previous one. Updated wording extends deadline ByteDance must sell TikTok, provide one year for it, not six monthsas previously planned.
Since the majority in the Senate is Democrats, experts expect the bill to pass smoothly.
TikTok’s general counsel Erich Andersen is at risk of being fired over the company’s efforts to address national security concerns, according to Bloomberg. However, a representative of TikTok denied these claims and said that they were completely false.
With the Senate currently in recess, the timeline for further action on the TikTok bill remains unclear. However, if the bill successfully passes the Senate and reaches President Joe Biden’s desk, Biden has promised to sign it and make it law.
