Uber plans to add long-distance travel reservations on intercity trains, buses and planes to its schedule this year. The plan is to turn Uber’s travel app into a “super app” and a universal travel service.

“This is to ensure smooth door-to-door delivery,” said Jamie Haywood, Uber’s regional manager for UK, North and Japan Europe. Considered one of Uber’s largest markets outside of North America, the UK will launch the service before the wider network launches.

The company hopes that the addition of new modes of transportation will expand its core business scope to challenge passengers, as customers will use their community of drivers to travel between transit hubs, as well as to receive commissions for customer training or bus fares. Before the pandemic, about 15% of Uber’s trips were to airports, so the company hopes these high-margin trips can be increased by integrating flight booking and ticket sales.

Last summer, the UK became one of the first major Uber markets to return passenger numbers to pre-pandemic levels. The number of consumers traveling and delivering food in the last 12 months has reached 20 million.

After years of uncertainty about regulators’ ability to operate in London, the capital’s transport authority granted Uber an additional 30-month license in March.
