Qualcomm announces Snapdragon X Plus chip with the world’s fastest NPU

In October, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon X Elite chip, which aims to compete with Apple Silicon. Today, the company introduced Snapdragon X Plus, another offering in the Snapdragon X series. As the name suggests, this is a more affordable and slightly less powerful version of the Snapdragon X Elite. Both chips are expected to be available for Windows-on-Arm laptops in mid-2024.

Qualcomm focused on artificial intelligence capabilities of new Snapdragon X series chips

The Snapdragon X Plus chip is equipped with a total of 10 custom Orion processor cores produced by Qualcomm. According to the company, the CPU delivers a 37% performance increase with 54% less power compared to “competitors.” However, the company did not disclose its “competition” further.

Another aspect that Qualcomm emphasizes is the performance related to the chip’s powerful NPU and possible artificial intelligence on the device. The Snapdragon X series chips are said to have the “world’s fastest NPU for laptops.” The custom Qualcomm Hexagon NPU processor is rated at 45 TOPS (trillion operations per second), and the company says it will deliver unprecedented performance, efficiency, and AI capabilities in a Windows PC device.

All these AI capabilities on the device are expected to enable developers to add various new and exciting features to the applications, making life much easier. However, it requires more than powerful chips and we will have to wait for the features to become available.

Qualcomm demonstrated the AI capabilities of this chip using code generation in Codegen’s “Visual Studio Code.” It is an application designed to assist developers by creating new lines of code in real-time using generative artificial intelligence on the device. The company also demonstrated creating music from text prompts in Audacity and automatic language translation to live captions in OBS Studio.

The Snapdragon The codename of the device suggests that it could be a Surface Laptop, Surface Pro 10.
