Overall, the average time spent by threat actors within organizations’ networks has fallen to its lowest level in a decade.
The 15th annual M-Trends 2024 report from Google-owned Mandiant shows that the time spent by threat actors within a network has fallen to its lowest level in a decade. These results show that companies are increasingly able to detect and prevent unwanted activity on their networks. The report is based on global results, which when broken down by region produces a very different result for Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).
Average residence time
Mean dwell time is the average time that attackers remain undetected in a target’s network after gaining access. Mandiant’s report provides an analysis of the evolving threat landscape based on Mandiant’s first-line incident response surveys and threat intelligence insights into attacks and remediation through 2023.
Globally, Mandiant saw a decline of 10 days, compared to 16 days in 2022. This means that organizations were able to identify the dip in 2023 within an average of 10 days. This is the lowest number of days in 10 years.
Ransomware
When breaking down the results by type of attack, it appears that the median for ransomware attacks drops sharply, to a median of 5 days. This may indicate that ransomware attacks are easier to detect. The number of ransomware incidents was 23 percent in 2023, higher than the 18 percent rate in 2022. Even though there are more ransomware attacks, companies can detect them faster.

Additionally, the report showed that there are some differences between different sectors and geographical areas. The financial sector (17.3%), business and professional services (13.3%) and high technology (12.4%) are in the top three. Looking at the overall results by region, Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA) saw an increase in median length of stay from 20 days to 22 days. The large global decline is primarily due to the sharp decline among organizations in Asia Pacific, where the median length of stay fell from 33 days to 9 days.
