Google is shutting down another popular service: where will its functions be transferred?

It’s about Google Meet. This is a video phone service that was launched in 2017 and mainly focuses on the corporate sector. Now the company is combining it with another Google Duo service, which also offers video services, but for private users.

Two services – one

The pandemic has created a huge demand for video communication applications. Companies have moved their meetings into cyberspace, and it has long been the only way for casual users to communicate with loved ones. In March 2020, Google announced Meet as free and open to everyone, making it 30 times more popular than before, reaching 100 million daily users. But Zoom, a competitive product, revealed that 200 million people are operating daily. Therefore, the company is likely to take such a step to improve its competitive position in the video market.

  • In the coming weeks, Google will push all Meet features to Duo.
  • He then changed the Duo’s name to Meet for a year.
  • The Duo project will then go to a virtual graveyard where more than a hundred different Google services are buried.
  • This will combine the two services into one that will have the functions of both.

The updated application will remain free for all users. They will be able to video call friends and family from a phone number or email address, use various filters and effects, send messages, and ask Google Assistant to make calls using available devices. All conversations, contacts and messages will continue to be stored in the program – you will not need to download a new one.

New features

This update will provide Duo users with enhanced features that were previously only available in Meet:

  • Set a virtual background during calls and meetings.
  • Schedule a meeting so everyone can join at their own convenient time.
  • Use chat during the meeting for deeper interaction.
  • Ability to share content live.
  • Real time subtitles.
  • Increasing the number of participants from 32 to 100.
  • Integrate with other tools including Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messaging and more
