We all expected Blizzard to officially announce the dates and other information of BlizzCon 2024 soon, the annual gathering where the developer makes some of the most anticipated launches and announcements of the year. Let us recall that until 2020 this convention is held annually and has brought together, either in person or online, a large part of the players of its titles. Of course, the year of the pandemic was different (in the end there was an exclusively online version, in February 2021, which grouped the events of that year and the previous one) and then, in 2022, the studio decided to cancel the event, as it was, it was immersed in a crisis caused by toxicity.

Last year everything seemed to be back to normal, with a BlizzCon 2023 celebration held several weeks after Microsoft’s purchase of Activision-Blizzard King was confirmed and completed, but was announced and organized before that operation was completed. Of course, this leads us to believe that this event will be held again each year, maintaining the in-person and online modes, once the dark clouds seem to dissipate.

However, surprisingly, it turns out that this was not the case, and it is Blizzard has officially announced that BlizzCon 2024 is cancelled., as we can read here. And most disturbingly, after reading said communication, it’s not at all clear what the reason (or set of reasons) was why the studio, now owned by Microsoft, decided it would be better not to host the event this year, leaving its future continuity up in the air .

It is true that at the end of the first paragraph of this text they state that “We’ll be as excited as ever to bring BlizzCon back in the years to come«, so in theory we are not talking about a definitive cancellation. However, the lack of concrete reasons to explain the cancellation of BlizzCon 2024 has added to the talk of “future years«, i.e. lack of specificity in both key points, invites us to be somewhat skeptical about the future of this event.

It’s true that, BlizzCon has had some embarrassing moments in the past, like when the assistant asked the developers about the hypersexualization of the female characters and the response she got was worthy of a small group of teenagers (with respect to the regular ones) carried away by their own hormones and with little or no desire to shower frequently. Or the one in which, driven by shareholder greed, the company announced Diablo Immortal, earning a roar that must still resonate in the nightmares of Wyatt Cheng, who had to stand up and take the stage. ridicule.

However, despite this, the event has brought much more joy than disappointment to the gaming community, and currently there seems to be no reason to suspend it this year, leaving its future up in the air.
