Fallout in Excel, the crossover no one saw coming

Yes, you read that right, Fallout in Excel, although to be more precise when I say Fallout I’m talking about an unofficial RPG clearly inspired by the Bethesda franchise. And when I talk about Excel, I’m talking about… Microsoft’s spreadsheet solution, one of the most underrated applications in the world by those who don’t use it, a tool so powerful yet time-flexible that it actually works on virtually everything, even calculations.

The truth is that we already knew of other uses for Excel that were far away purposes for which this application was theoretically originally designed. For example, a few years ago we told you that a user brought X-COM to the Microsoft table, not to mention that this application has been sharing importance with games in the eSports ecosystem for several years. Of course, it is not surprising that Satya Nadella put it at the head of the podium of products created by Microsoft throughout its history.

from his side Fallout has gained quite a bit of notoriety again in recent weeks due to the long-awaited premiere of the Amazon series, as well as the release a few days ago of a new official update that updated its graphics engine (which, of course, meant the delay of the expected unofficial Fallout mod: London). So while we’re still years away from Bethesda releasing a new title in the franchise, interest in it has grown exponentially over the past month.

So if we combine an app extremely well rated by its users and one of the trending games, what can go wrong? That must have been the thinking of Dynamic Pear, a content creator who, by his own admission, always wanted to make a game but never had the knowledge or time. However, he has quite a bit of experience working with the Microsoft spreadsheet, so the path was clear and he followed it, thus creating a Fallout-based RPG for Excel.

The project, which you can find information about at this link and a how-to video on his YouTube channel, is now available for download from his website (you will see the download button just before the text begins on it) and, of course, is free to release. And if you’re wondering, yes, we’re talking about an excel file with macros that can generate quite a few bookings, but that’s why I downloaded it to analyze it in VirusTotal and as you can see here, the result is quite comforting.

Obviously, due to the limitations of Excel, Graphically, you shouldn’t expect a design comparable to the Fallout titles. However, you only need to spend a few minutes to see that Dynamic Pear tried to offer still the most fun experience that can somehow transport us to the wasteland. And yes, I’m sure you’ve thought about it too, it’s perfect for making others think we’re working (after all, it’s Excel) when we’ve actually been on quite an adventure.
