Scientists from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) have discovered an unusual creature in the waters of the Pacific Ocean that resembles a pig bone on one side and Mick Jagger’s lips on the other. This organism was so unusual that it was not possible to classify it immediately.
Researchers obtained samples of so-called “mystery drops” from the mesopelagic zone located at depths of 200 to 1000 meters in California’s Monterey Bay. After detailed study, scientists determined that these creatures were large larvae of hetopterids, a group of pinworms that form paper tubes on the seafloor.
Significantly larger than any previously known hetopterid larva, these particular specimens appeared to be five to ten times larger and lack visible genitals, suggesting their possible young age.
This discovery shows that these creatures may be at an early stage of development, but they are already adult size, providing new interest in their evolutionary potential and adaptability. Source
