The basic mechanics of walkie-talkie, push-to-talk, no longer make sense because of the mobile phone and its free calls via WhatsApp and other apps. However, this way of working still offers a certain appeal, mainly due to the uncertainty. not knowing who will speak or what to say. This is the point made by TenTen, a walkie-talkie app that has gained popularity thanks to the simplicity of its approach.

The application is more or less a standard social network, although it is also aimed at private communication. To use it you need not only an account on the platform, but also friends who use it: although it works walkie-talkie style, TenTen does not allow open conversation. All communications take place in the private domain: everyone involved must authorize.

When you start an account, for which you must sign up via email, Google or TikTok, TenTen requests access to three basic permissions: notifications, microphone and contacts. The TenTen interface is minimized so that there is almost no push to talk button, friends to engage in vocal conversation, and very little else. The rest is as everyone imagines from the radio:

• TenTen will pick up the voice of everyone speaking within the voice group.
• The app will reproduce in real time regardless of whether the intervention is in the foreground, another app is being used, or the screen is off.
• TenTen respects do not disturb mode: If enabled, a “do not disturb” message will appear to other users. Messages will not ring on this phone.
• The notification will appear when someone intervenes, but it will only be a warning: the audio is not transcribed and cannot be recovered. Everything talked about disappears.
